9:30am-9:45am - Chapter Updates

9:45am-10:45 - Session #1 – “Utilizing Active Desiccant in HVAC Systems to Maintain Critical Room Environments”- presenter John Brantley

This presentation will discuss the challenges faced in maintaining the temperature and humidity requirements in varying healthcare settings.  Multiple examples will illustrate how desiccant options can provide CAPEX and OPEX benefits and most importantly space occupant approval.

10:45-11:00 – Break & Networking

11:00 – noon – Session #2 – “Zero Energy Healthcare – How Integrative Design Produced a Facility Operating Less than $0.41/ SF/ Year”– presenter Amanda Occhi

Medical facilities are typically energy intensive structures that significantly contribute to environmental pollution. Meanwhile, healthcare organizations strive to make their communities healthier. Pueblo Community Health tackled this dichotomy head on by pursuing Zero Energy building strategies to reduce operational costs, reduce the impact on the environment, and benefit the future of the community. We are excited to present the case study of a new, 64k SF, three-story clinic building designed to produce as much energy as it consumes, thereby using zero energy over the course of a year. This presentation will focus on critical activities and lessons learned from this project that can be applied directly to your organization.

1.      Gain new ideas on how to reduce operational costs.

2.      Understand how to integrate modeling, renewable energy, and project stakeholder engagement to achieve Zero Energy verification.

3.      Implement the Integrative Design process on new and renovation projects.

4.      Respond to stakeholder demands to reduce carbon emissions and energy use.

5.      Value the benefits of Zero Energy facilities.

Noon-12:45pm – Lunch & Networking

12:45pm – 1:00pm – Scholarship presentation/Elections

 1:00pm – 2:00 pm – Session #3 – “Trending in Healthcare” - presenter Chris Grossnicklaus

This course provides an overview of the trends in demand or market dynamics that are impacting healthcare architecture growth and development. The topics address includes building typologies, standards development, and construction delivery.

·       1. What factors – whether it be a growing and aging community, new legislation, a rise in demand or other trends – are impacting hospital expansions and new developments?

·       2. How are developers, investors and designers prioritizing patient care in existing facilities and ground-up construction projects?

·       3. With the shift towards outpatient and ambulatory care settings, what are some of the considerations in new building developments.

 2:00pm – 2:15 pm – Break & Networking

2:15pm – 3:15pm – Session #4 – “Life Safety -Creating and Maintaining the Health Care Environment” - presenter Tim Adams

Health Care organizations are no doubt aware of the need to maintain compliance with the Life Safety Code. Often lost in minutia of compliance is that fact that all who create, maintain, and work in a health care environment play a role in the healing process by assuring a safe and compassionate environment.

This session will examine the roll that design, construction, and operations professionals play in assuring that health facilities are not only compliant but are also safe.

1.      An integrated approach to creating and maintaining a facility compliant with the Life Safety Code

2.      Common Life Safety Code compliance challenges

a.      Design challenges

b.      Construction challenges

c.      Operations challenges
